Invented by New York candy maker Leo Hirschfield, who named the product after his five year old daughter, Clara, his little Tootsie. The current owner of the candy just passed away, Melvin Gordon who built an empire on sweets. He was quoted, "Nothing can happen to a Tootsie Roll. We have some that were made in 1938 that we still eat. If you can't bite it when it's that old, you can always lick it"
